Bad night: Cameroon’s Samuel Eto’o
11 April 2012

Eto'o is defiant despite shock

Samuel Eto'o is convinced Cameroon will qualify for the quarter-finals despite becoming the latest World Cup qualifier to suffer a shock defeat in this tournament.

Cameroon lost their opener 1-0 to Gabon with Hull City's Daniel Cousin capitalising on poor defending to score after 17 minutes. The four-time champions pressed for an equaliser but were denied by some smart goalkeeping from Achille Emana.

Cameroon follow fellow World Cup finalists Algeria and Nigeria in suffering defeat in Angola but Inter Milan striker Eto'o said: "It's not a big problem. It is one of those things in football and we just have to put it behind us."

Gabon captain Cousin said: "It is a dream, to have beaten a star-studded Cameroonian team."

Next for Kin

Malawi coach Kinnah Phiri will be offered a contract extension when it expires in May. Monday's 3-0 win over Algeria was the country's first in the competition. "I wouldn't be so stupid as to give him away," said Walter Nyamilandu, president of the Malawi FA. "This is a winning formula and we need to maintain it."

Algeria bust-up

Algeria's problems have worsened after midfielder Khaled Lemmouchia quit the squad amid reports of a row with coach Rabah Saadane. The Algerian FA have refused to comment on reports Faouzi Chaouchi threw several punches at team-mate Mohamed Ousserir following training, the day after a 3-0 defeat to Malawi.
