Swansea announce signing of West Ham forward Enner Valencia... the day after he completes Everton move

Too little, too late: Valencia had already signed for

Swansea City fans hoping that they might sign Enner Valencia were briefly given hope of a shock turnaround this morning… until they remembered he had signed for Everton.

The south Wales side’s official website today published a “in-depth look” at the new signing, just hours after the West Ham forward had rejected interest from the Swans and signed for Everton.

Swansea have since removed the article from their website in which they challenged the striker, nicknamed “Superman” in his native Ecuador, to earn “hero status” at what they hoped would be his new club.

The page was marked with a publication time of 8pm on August 31, at which time Swansea were still in the race for Valencia.

Valencia scored 10 goals in 66 appearances for West Ham, but could set Everton back a reported £14.5million should they choose to make the loan deal permanent next summer.

Failing to acquire Valencia from West Ham ends a largely disappointing summer for Francesco Guidolin’s side, who lost star men Andre Ayew and Ashley Williams to the Hammers and Everton.

Timeline of the summer transfer deadline day

Ecuador international Valencia found starting opportunities limited at West Ham this season, with the arrival of Simone Zaza from Juventus pushing him even further down the pecking order.
