Shaw is the subject of investigations from the Gambling Commission and Football Association after being filmed eating a pasty on the sidelines during his side’s 2-0 defeat to their Premier League opponents at Gander Green Lane. Standard Sport understands Shaw was invited to resign by the club.

Bookmaker Sun Bets, the club’s shirt sponsors for the fifth round tie, had been offering odds of 8-1 that Shaw would be filmed eating during the game.

He subsequently admitted that he had been aware of the offer, though insisted he himself had not place a bet.

His manager Paul Doswell told Sky News: “It has been very disappointing, there’s no doubt about that.

“It’s something that we’ve dealt with quickly as a club. Wayne himself has offered his resignation to the club this afternoon and that has been accepted.

“It’s a very sad end to what was a very good story.

“He's made his position pretty much untenable. If I had been party to the decision I would have advised him very differently but he chose not to speak to the chairman or myself.”

The Gambling Commission confirmed this afternoon that they would undertake an investigation into the incident, with the enforcement and intelligence director Richard Watson saying “integrity in sport is not a joke”.

It was later confirmed that the Football Association would conduct their own investigation.

A Sutton statement confirmed: "Wayne Shaw has resigned from his role at Sutton United following the events of last evening and subsequent publicity. He has said that he 'fully understands the club's position regarding this matter.'

"We are naturally disappointed that Wayne's time with us should end in this manner, and would like to thank him for his contribution to the club and wish him well for the future."

Speaking subsequently on Sky Sports News Doswell could offer no guarantees that none of his players had bet on Shaw eating the pie. "If any of our staff or players have bet they will suffer the same consequences," he said.

"I hope the players won't be involved but I would have said Wayne wouldn't have done so I can't hand on heart say they haven't been."

Sutton are understood to be disappointed that the attention surrounding Shaw's pasty-eating has detracted from the coverage of what had been an exceptional display against one of Europe's top club sides, in which the National League hosts had enjoyed several impressive moments despite Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott's goals securing passage to the last eight for Arsenal.
