Slaven Bilic doesn't expect Angelo Ogbonna to be sidelined for an extended period after coming off with a hamstring problem in the victory over Newcastle on Monday.

The Italy international was brought off before the break in the 2-0 win as Carl Jenkinson filled in at right-back and James Tomkins shuffled into the middle.

But Bilic suggested it will only be a matter of days before Ogbonna can return to the training pitch despite not receiving an exact diagnosis before fulfilling his post-match media obligations.

"We still don’t know what is wrong with him," Bilic told reporters after the match.

"It was a long sprint, and it was dangerous and he pulled his hamstring. But I spoke to him and we don’t know yet.

"It doesn’t look like a big [injury] maybe just one week off."

Meanwhile, the West Ham boss was delighted to see Andy Carroll return to action in the Premier League on Monday evening.

The England international made a brief appearance from the bench in the dying moments after a seven month absence and Bilic believes Carroll will add something different to his attack.

He added: "We are all delighted he is back – it is like signing a new player. It was a really good night – also for him."
