‘Season over for Andy Johnson’

Andy Johnson is likely to miss the rest of the season after suffering a serious knee injury against Chelsea.

Queens Park Rangers today confirmed the 31-year-old faces a prolonged period on the sidelines, having damaged his anterior cruciate ligament on Saturday.

Johnson was forced off after 32 minutes of the 0-0 draw at Loftus Road and scans have revealed the full extent of the problem. The former Crystal Palace forward had a similar injury in 2010 and was unable to play for nine months.

The news is a blow for Mark Hughes, who signed Johnson on a two-year deal in the summer to reunite him with former Fulham strike partner Bobby Zamora. However, the QPR manager also has Djibril Cisse and Jamie Mackie among his attacking options.

Johnson’s team-mate Alejandro Faurlin tweeted: “Gutted to hear about AJ’s injury. He is a top man and a top professional. He is strong and positive, no doubt he will be on the field in no time.”

New signing Esteban Granero, also on Twitter, added: “Sad about AJ’s injury but he is a big fighter and I’m sure he will get well soon.”

Meanwhile, Anton Ferdinand and on-loan Manchester United defender Fabio sustained hamstring strains and are both expected to be out for two weeks.
