AS Roma and club president Jim Pallotta have made a €150,000 (£133,154) donation to the fundraising effort for stricken Liverpool fan Sean Cox.

Cox was left with life-changing injuries after being attacked ahead of the first leg of Liverpool's Champions League semi-final against Roma at Anfield in April.

A fund to support his rehabilitation was recently launched, with Jurgen Klopp, Seamus Coleman and David Meyler among the first to donate.

Roma have now pledged a €100,000 to the fund through their Roma Cares foundation, while club president Pallotta has made a personal donation worth €50,000.

The Italian club have also promised to support further fundraising initiatives in order to help the Cox family meet the costs of care.

Pallotta said: "What happened to Sean Cox should never happen to those who go to watch a football match.

"From the first day, our thoughts are with Sean, Martina and all their family. We all hope that Sean will fully recover as soon as possible ".

Sean's wife, Martina, said: "Our life has been turned upside down by what happened to Sean.

"There is no sign that he will be able to return home soon, not even with the best rehabilitation specialist care, which will take years and will require constant assistance for the rest of his life.

"We greatly appreciate the donation of AS Roma and Pallotta and in particular the commitment to contribute over the next few years to the battle that Sean has to face".
