Harry Redknapp has backed Sam Allardyce to do "very well" as England manager, with the current Sunderland boss expected to be appointed in the coming days.

However, the deal will not be announced until Sunderland have negotiated a compensation package for the 61-year-old, who guided the Black Cats to safety last term.

Allardyce has a wealth of experience in the Premier League, albeit not abroad or on the European stage, and Redknapp is adamant his countryman has what it take to lead the Three Lions.

"It's a great opportunity and I think Sam will do very well," he told BBC Five Live.

"He's managed at the top level for so many years now. He's got great enthusiasm. He's his own man and he will do it his way.

"I think he gets the best out of people. He will tell it how it is. I've got a lot of time for Sam, I think he'll be excellent," Redknapp added.

Allardyce's preferred style of play is often accused of being negative and he is regularly accused of falling back on 'long ball football' by disgruntled managerial rivals.

However, Redknapp believes his countryman's reputation is unjustified and is hopeful Allardyce can implement a brand of football that will help England to be a success on.

"Yes - he'll get the ball in the box, he'll get shots in. People get carried away.

"I watched the Euros, I've never been so bored in all of my life watching some of the football.

"Everybody wants to roll it out form the back and you've got to beat the whole team to get it up the pitch.

"Sam will demand a bit more pace to our game and maybe he'll play more of an English style Premier League type football and hopefully that will bring success," added Redknapp.

England begin their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign against Slovakia on September 4 but Allardyce's first game in charge is expected to be a friendly at Wembley three days prior to the trip to Trnava.
