The Russian Football Union has been fined £22,000 by Fifa for discriminatory chants by Russia fans during a friendly match against France in March.

Supporters were heard directing monkey chants towards French players including Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante on more than one occasion in the 3-1 win for France in Saint Petersburg.

After a “thorough investigation including the review of video evidence” Fifa handed the Russian federation a fine of 30,000 Swiss francs, noting “the gravity of the incident but also the limited number of fans involved”.

The statement from world football governing body added: “Fifa has a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination and has been implementing a series of measures to fight discrimination and promote diversity.”

Saint Petersburg’s Krestovsky Stadium will host seven matches at the World Cup, including Russia’s game against Egypt, a semi-final and the third-place playoff.

Zenit Saint Petersburg, the stadium’s occupants, were charged by Uefa on two separate occasions during this season’s Europa League over discriminatory chanting.
