Tottenham striker Roberto Soldado has apologised to fans via his Instagram page after missing a penalty at a crucial stage of their 4-1 defeat to Manchester City.

The Spaniard had the opportunity to level the score at 2-2 from the spot, having won the penalty himself after Martin Demichelis was controversially adjudged to have brought him down inside the City penalty area.

However, his tame effort was comfortably saved by an in-form Joe Hart and City soon re-established their two goal advantage.

Clearly feeling guilty over the missed opportunity, the striker wrote: “Sad match in which we had our opportunities including my penalty. I’m sorry and I’ll keep working hard to help the team with my goals.”

Given a rare Premier League start in the absence of Emmanuel Adebayor, Soldado had started the game brightly creating a fine opportunity for Ryan Mason with a beautifully weighted pass through the heart of the City defence.

However, the Spaniard’s lack of confidence became apparent as he struck the most unconvincing of penalties at Joe Hart’s goal.

The former Valencia man has failed to justify his sizable transfer fee since his arrival in north London last summer and today’s penalty miss may well have convinced the club and its supporters that he is no longer worth persisting with.
