Riyad Mahrez could feature for Manchester City against Chelsea in the Community Shield on Sunday after a scan on his injured ankle revealed “no significant damage”.

The 27-year-old, Manchester City’s record signing after joining from Leicester for £60million earlier this summer, limped out of the first half of a 3-2 pre-season friendly win over Bayern Munich on Saturday, leading to fears he could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Mahrez departed the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida wearing a protective boot but City have since confirmed that the Algerian did not suffer a serious injury.

"Riyad Mahrez has been given the all-clear to return to training later this week after picking up an ankle knock,” City said in a statement.

"A scan today has revealed no significant damage, and he could be available for selection for this weekend's Community Shield against Chelsea.”

Pep Guardiola’s Premier League champions face FA Cup holders Chelsea at Wembley on Sunday before kicking off their title defence against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium a week later.
