Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid honours: Every trophy he has won as player and manager at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid are set to announce the unexpected return of one of their most famous, and most successful, stars.

When Zinedine Zidane quit the Santiago Bernabeu last summer, most people presumed that would be the end of his association with the club he had managed for two and a half seasons, having spent five years there as a player.

But after a disastrous season, in which first Julen Lopetegui was axed and now Santiago Solari looks set to follow suit, club president Florentino Perez appears to have put out an SOS – and Zidane has answered the call.

Zidane’s Madrid career began in 2001, when he moved to Spain for a world record transfer fee from Juventus, where he had won two Serie A titles, while also sparkling on the international stage, winning the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championships two years later.

In his very first season with the club, Zidane won the Champions League, the club’s ninth European title, scoring a volley in the final against Bayer Leverkusen that is widely regarded as one of the greatest goals in the competition’s history.

The following year, he helped the Galacticos regain the Liga title they had surrendered to Valencia a year earlier, though remarkably it would be the only league triumph during his five years at the club, and he never won the Copa del Rey either.

However, that didn’t stop his time in Spain being littered with individual accolades, including the Fifa World Player of the Year award in 2003.

In 2014, the Frenchman began his managerial career as boss of Real Madrid’s B team, Castilla, but when Rafa Benitez was sacked in January 2016, Zizou was given the top job.

Later that season, Zidane led his side to the first of three successive Champions League titles with a penalty shootout win over Madrid rivals Atletico.

While European glory followed again the next season, with a triumph over Juventus in Cardiff, Zidane also took his managerial brilliance to the domestic and global stages, winning LaLiga and the Club World Cup.

He defended the latter title, and completed the Champions League hat-trick with victory over Liverpool in Kiev last season, but lost the league crown to Barcelona, before walking away on 31 May.
