Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have reiterated their stance that the club is not for sale after reports of a failed £2bn takeover bid emerged.

According to the Daily Mail, Sheikh Khaled Bin Zayed Al Nehayan, a cousin of Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour, made what would represent a world-record offer for the club after talks between intermediaries earlier this year.

The report claims that Reds chairman Tom Werner met with a representative of Sheikh Khaled in New York in order to discuss the proposals, though discussions eventually collapsed.

However, FSG, who wrested control of the club from fellow Americans Tom Hicks and George Gillett in October 2010, remain insistent that they are not looking to sell up.

The Boston-based ownership group have made no secret of their willingness to part with a minority stake in order to help further grow the club.

Investment firm Allan & Co have been enlisted to help in that search by fielding enquiries from potential investors and assessing their suitability.

But, in the case of Sheikh Khaled’s interest, the proposal did not get past the vetting stage after being judged to be neither credible or worthy of being put to the ownership team.

Rumours of a takeover bid last emerged in October 2017, when a Dubai-based consortium led by Amanda Staveley reportedly offered £1.5bn.

As in this case, however, those suggestions were quickly refuted, with Werner saying: “We have better things to do than batting down rumours about negotiations with Ms Staveley. However, there's no truth to them."
