Chelsea: Mauricio Pochettino safe for now but club expect better by summer

Mauricio Pochettino retains the backing of the Chelsea hierarchy, despite heavy back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Wolves.

Chelsea want to see an improvement in results, and Pochettino is under pressure to convince co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali that Chelsea are making progress under him by the end of the season. However, the owners are not planning another mid-season managerial change.

The club would like Pochettino to see out the season before assessing the progress of the team. Pochettino would come under scrutiny if Chelsea fail to qualify for Europe.

Chelsea are 11th in the Premier League but have the Carabao Cup Final against Liverpool at Wembley later this month. And the Blues face Aston Villa in an FA Cup fourth-round replay at Villa Park on Wednesday.

Boehly and Eghbali offered similar support to Graham Potter before he was sacked in April last year. They are keen to avoid another mid-season change, after Frank Lampard failed to improve the results at the end of last season.

Pochettino and his staff signed two-year contracts last summer and sacking them could reportedly cost Chelsea more than £10million in compensation.

Pochettino apologised to supporters after Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to Wolves and admitted “nobody is safe”.

Before the poor results against Liverpool and Wolves last week, Chelsea had won three League games in a row, as well as reaching the Carabao Cup showpiece.

Chelsea’s new owners have spent more than £1billion in the transfer market, albeit while selling £400m worth of players, but Chelsea continue to struggle. The owners and co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart have faced criticism for building the youngest squad in the Premier League, which lacks leaders, physicality and experience.

The players are believed to largely back Pochettino, but the atmosphere at Cobham has declined alongside the poor results, with players struggling to gel on and off the field.

Pochetttino said after the Wolves defeat: “We’re all not good enough. The players need to take responsibility, like I take responsibility. At the moment, we are not matching the history of the club.”
