Paul Merson has broken down in tears while paying tribute to former Aston Villa team-mate Ugo Ehiogu.

Tottenham confirmed their Under-23 coach Ehiogu passed away on Friday morning, having suffered a cardiac arrest at the club's training ground on Thursday.

Merson played alongside Ehiogu at Villa Park and was visibly moved when he appeared on Sky Sports News to discuss his friend's passing.

"Only the good die young - and that is him," Merson said. "He was a top player, a top bloke and a good friend as well.

"I talked to him recently saying and he was always winding me up, saying 'Tottenham have got some good players coming through.'

"[My thoughts] go out to his family," Merson added.

Ehiogu won the League Cup twice during his spell at Villa and also lifted the trophy with Middlesbrough in 2004.
