Pablo Mari has thanked fans for their support after he was stabbed in a Milan supermarket.

The Arsenal defender, currently on loan at Serie A club Monza, required surgery on a deep cut he suffered while shopping with his wife and son.

Local media have reported the death of one man in the incident, in which at least five people were injured.

On Friday afternoon, Mari posed for a photo alongside his wife, Veronica Chacon, at his bed in the city’s Niguarda Hospital with a Twitter update on their condition.

The 29-year-old wrote: “After the hard time we experienced yesterday, both my family and I want to communicate that fortunately we are all fine despite the circumstances.

“And to thank all the messages of support and affection that we are receiving.”

Monza stated the surgery was necessary to reconstruct two muscles on Mari’s shoulder with the Spaniard quoted in Italy as describing the horror of the unprovoked attack.

“Today I was lucky, because I saw a person die in front of me,” Mari is quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport as having told Monza president Adriano Galliani and head coach Raffaele Palladino.
