Off and running: Champions Chelsea back in training

First day back: Yossi Benayoun and Michael Essien
11 April 2012

There was a welcome sight for Chelsea fans today as new signing Yossi Benayoun and Michael Essien started pre-season training.

The pair were joined at Cobham by all the other Blues players who were not involved in the World Cup.

The majority of the first-team squad, including England internationals John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole, return in two weeks' time.

Israel international Benayoun, who completed a £5.5million move from Liverpool on Friday, will make a big difference to Chelsea, according to keeper Petr Cech.

He said: "I think he is a very intelligent player, very technical and different from other types of players we have. For me he is a very good player so I think he will be very welcome.

"I was surprised [Joe] Cole left because he's been at Chelsea for many years. I think he's been a great player for us."

Essien, who missed the tournament in South Africa, has not played since sustaining a knee at the African Nations' Cup in January.
