The Football Writers’ Association have named Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante as their player of the year.

It is the latest award for Kante, who has already been named player of the year by his fellow players in the PFA awards and was named the capital’s top Premier League star at the London Football Awards.

Fellow star Eden Hazard finished second in the voting - the top two claiming 65 per cent of the vote, and Tottenham's Dele Alli came third.

Kante said: "It is a fantastic honour to win this award. With so many great players in this Chelsea squad and in the Premier League, for the Football Writers' Association to name me their Footballer of the Year is a very proud moment in my career."

Kante looks set to crown a remarkable debut season at Stamford Bridge with the Premier League title. Chelsea, in action tonight at home to Middlesbrough, will be crowned champions if they win their next two games.

Should Chelsea secure the title Kante would join a select group of players to have won the English top flight in consecutive seasons with different clubs having played a crucial role in Leicester’s stunning triumph 12 months ago.

His performances in the heart of Claudio Ranieri’s side earned him a £32million move to Chelsea that has rarely proven to be a disappointment.

Kante’s manager Antonio Conte still believes there is more to come from the French international though.

“He's working very hard and I think he's improving a lot with these players,” Conte said last month. “He's a really good guy. He's always available to work and improve his weaknesses. I hope he continues in this way. It's important for him not to stop this will, this desire, to continue to improve himself.

“The most important thing for a player is to give continuity in performance. He's been doing it this last season and this season. His performance is always really good.

“He's improving a lot. But I think also he can improve still, and he must continue to improve still.”
