Mauricio Pochettino has opened the door to becoming England manager in the future – but dismissed the idea he could succeed Sam Allardyce.

Gareth Southgate will take charge of the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers after Allardyce departed earlier this week following an exposé by the Telegraph.

Tottenham boss Pochettino will not be among those pushing to succeed him but the job of leading England is appealing.

Asked about the prospect, he said: “Yes, why not? In the ‘future-future’. Not now, it’s impossible, as I signed a new five-year contract here earlier this year.

“It is not my moment. Not only is it not the moment here, but the same is true of Argentina (his home country), too.”

Pochettino’s team face Manchester City on Sunday, as the closest challengers to the Premier League leaders in the early part of the campaign.

A win would take Spurs to within a point of City before the international break and establish their status as possible title contenders.

Four Spurs players – Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Dele Alli – are likely to be included in the next England squad, though Harry Kane will miss out due to his ankle injury.

Pochettino added: “The players need to be focused on Tottenham, and then we will see. They need to focus on playing against Manchester City. The FA are in a different moment now, finding another manager to take charge of English football.”

Pochettino must decide whether to stick with forward Vincent Janssen, who struggled in the 1-0 win over CSKA Moscow, or play the in-form Heung-min Son as a striker, with Alli, Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen slightly deeper.
