Maurcio Pochettino hails Tottenham's Kieran Trippier as 'one of the best English players'

Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Kieran Trippier as one of the best English players in the Premier League.

The Tottenham full-back shone on a steady night for Spurs as they beat Watford 2-0 to take a step closer to a third successive season of Champions League football.

Trippier has had to wrestle with the burden of replacing the departed Kyle Walker this season, as well as competing with summer signing Serge Aurier for his first-team place.

Having been rotated with the Frenchman for the majority of the season, Trippier has been on of Pochettino’s most consistent performers and further cemented his reputation with a key role in the first goal and an assist for the second on Monday night.

“I think our full-backs have been fantastic this season,” Pochettino told Standard Sport. “If you see the stats of Kieran Trippier and Ben Davies or when we play with Danny Rose and Serge Aurier, I think we have great quality there.

“For me, Kieran is one of the best English players in the Premier League and he deserves a lot of credit. Assists, playing passes, crosses he is one of the best.”

It was far from a vintage performance from Tottenham, but they did what was needed in order to ensure the three points were safe on a night few would have enjoyed.

Having seen his players’ mentality questioned following the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United, Pochettino was pleased to see a professional performance.

“Yes, of course. I am satisfied with the mentality,” he said.

“I feel proud of the process. After nearly four years here at the club, sharing with the players during four years, another three, another two, I am so proud about the mentality and the commitment that they show.

“Of course we talk about performance, some good days, some not so good days, but I think always trying to give their best and that is why I feel so proud about the team.”

Tottenham face a trip to West Brom next before home games at Wembley against Newcastle and Leicester round off what will be another successful season should they finish in the top four without their own stadium to call home.
