We thought it was all over but legendary football commentator Martin Tyler has returned to TV.

After calling games for 33 years on Sky Sports, the 78-year-old left his post in June having covered the Premier League for its entire history up to that point.

Tyler is best remembered for his “Agüerrrrrroooooooooo” shout as the Argentine forward scored to win the title for Manchester City in 2012 and he commentated on hundreds of games in his time.

It turns out, however, that football fans have not heard the last of the commentator just yet.

Has Martin Tyler retired?

It was thought that was the last we would hear of his Chester tones but it was announced on Monday that he will be back – although not for Sky.

This is an in-house production service that puts together coverage of games for distribution around the world. It will be shown in regions where broadcasting partners do not have their own dedicated team to send to England to cover the Premier League.

He joins a large roster of commentators in the pool, which includes Michael Owen and Clinton Morrison.

Premier League Productions also has a Spanish unit and the entity provides a feed to 730 million homes, something that is little known to most British fans.

Who replaced Martin Tyler?

Peter Drury, another veteran of the microphone, took Tyler’s job as Sky Sports’ lead football commentator for the 2023-24 Premier League season.

Drury has previously commentated on the game for the BBC, ITV, Premier League Productions and BT Sport.
