Marcello Trotta is determined to help Brentford into the Championship because the on-loan Fulham forward feels he has “unfinished business” at Griffin Park.

Manager Mark Warburton has revealed that Trotta is driven by memories of his penalty miss that cost Brentford promotion on the final day of last season.

Trotta, who crashed a last-minute spot-kick against the bar in the match with Doncaster, is back on loan at Brentford this season and although fans have been willing to forgive and forget, the 20-year-old is desperate to make amends.

“He took it to heart and wants to show the fans that he is passionate about Brentford being successful,” said Warburton.

“It is forgotten about as far as we are concerned but, in his mind, he feels he has some unfinished business here.”

Trotta has scored seven goals in 20 games since rejoining Brentford in September and recently extended the deal until the end of the season.

“He has shown tremendous strength of character,” said Warburton. “He wants to play a key role in making sure we achieve our aims this season and we are delighted with his level of performance.”

Brentford are top of League One after five straight wins since Warburton replaced Uwe Rosler and that run has seen the new boss named League One Manager of the Month for December. Midfielder Sam Saunders sealed a double for the club by winning the Player of the Month honour.

Brentford have a one-point lead over Leyton Orient ahead of tomorrow’s home game against Port Vale and Warburton said: “I could not have wished for a better start.

“It was not like a normal transition when a new manager comes in because I was already at the club. I knew the players well and I had a big say in getting many of them here. We have had a tough programme and the players have been outstanding.”

Brentford might give a debut to Arsenal forward Chuba Akpom, who has joined for a month. Akpom has scored six goals in 11 outings for the England Under-19 side.

Midfielder Alan Judge is also in line to feature following his loan move from Blackburn.
