Manchester United’s results against top six Premier League rivals has given them the belief to take on title challengers Liverpool, according to Ashley Young.

A 3-1 defeat at Anfield brought about the end of Jose Mourinho’s reign in Manchester. However, under the guise of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United have now beaten Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea away from home across both the League and FA Cup.

Their 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Monday night showed there is enough within Solskjaer’s squad to bounce back from poor results, having suffered their first defeat under the Norwegian in losing to PSG last week.

Next up for the resurgent Red Devils is Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side. With title rivals Manchester City taking on Chelsea in the League Cup final, their visit to Old Trafford presents a chance to open up a three point gap once more with their game in hand, but Young says United are ready after their run against big six opponents.

"It gives us all massive belief,” he said. “Obviously you will get confidence from winning games and that's exactly what we did against Chelsea. We beat Spurs away, and Arsenal away and now Chelsea away.

"We knew it would be tough, we had to be on the front foot and we knew we would have to defend but it's a fantastic result for us."

One of the biggest indicators of the change at Manchester United under Solskjaer has been the form of Paul Pogba.

His goal against Chelsea was the Frenchman’s ninth in 16 games since Solskjaer’s arrival, while the cross for Ander Herrera’s header was Pogba’s seventh assist in that time.

It is not just the club record signing who has stepped it up under the caretaker manager, though. Young revealed that his appointment and the subsequent upturn in form has raised everyone’s game in training.

"He's a world class player, you don't win a World Cup for no reason, but it's not just about Paul it's a team game and squad game,” Young said.

“Everyone that started the game, everyone on the bench, the boys that came on were fantastic. Scott was only on for a few minutes but he did his job and played his part when Andreas and Alexis came on they were fantastic as well. It's all competition for places and it keeps everyone on their toes.

"Every day in training you've got to be giving 100 per cent and everyone wants to be in the team. When you're winning games everyone wants to be in that team and part of it."
