Manchester United have made Harry Maguire the most expensive defender in history after confirming an £80million transfer deal with Leicester City.

The transfer was officially announced on Monday after Maguire passed a medical and signed a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finally landing his top target after weeks of negotiations.

United always maintained they would not meet Leicester’s £90m valuation, but continued to try to reach a breakthrough, with Solskjaer adamant the 26-year-old was vital to his plans.

He overtakes £75m Virgil van Dijk as the most expensive defender in history and is United’s second costliest player of all time after £89m record signing Paul Pogba.

Romelu Lukaku sits third in the list with United hoping to recoup the £75m they paid Everton for his services this summer with Inter Milan and Juventus eager to sign the Belgium international.
