Captain Wayne Rooney has not been included in Manchester United's squad for Tuesday evening's Champions League group game against PSV Eindhoven.

The 29-year-old forward suffered a hamstring injury in training last week and subsequently missed Saturday's 3-1 victory against fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

The club's medical staff had hoped that England's record goalscorer would be able to recover in time to travel to the Netherlands but he has not been deemed fit enough to play any part in the fixture.

Rooney is yet to open his account in the Premier League this term but proved to be a vital presence as the Red Devils secured their place in Europe's elite club competition with an emphatic 7-1 victory against Club Brugge last month.

The skipper's absence could see Louis van Gaal hand new signing Anthony Martial a first start for the club after the Frenchman made an instant impact against the Merseysiders with a well taken goal.

Goalkeeper David de Gea has also been included in the travelling party that will take on the Dutch champions after being reinstated between the sticks.

Youngsters James Wilson and Andreas Pereira, who joined United from PSV, have also been added to the squad as United attempt to open their European campaign with a victory.
