Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho insists he 'doesn't care' that Boxing Day results went against his side in the race for a top-four finish.

United beat Sunderland 3-1 at Old Trafford to secure their fourth straight Premier League victory for the first time under Mourinho.

Daley Blind, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan were on target as United kept the heat on their Premier League rivals, but victories for Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea meant they ended the day no closer to the Champions League places.

Mourinho's men remain four points off Arsene Wenger's fourth-placed side, who needed a late headed goal from Olivier Giroud to edge past West Brom at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners remain four points clear of United, but Mourinho was unfazed when the standings were put to him at full time.

"Honestly, I don't care," the United boss told the club's official website when asked about the gap to the top four.

"I care about the way we play, our results, and getting the maximum points possible. Of course, every match for us is very difficult. There are no easy matches but we are playing well and we are more confident."

Mourinho conceded before Christmas that United will find it very difficult catch Chelsea and win the Premier League title.

Victory for Antonio Conte's side against Bournemouth put them 13 points clear of United, while Manchester City won to remain six points ahead of their neighbours.

And asked about the continued success of the teams above United, Mourinho added: "What happens, happens. For example, I think, last week it was Manchester City against Arsenal and somebody had to lose points. More of these matches will come and other people will also lose points. Let's see."
