Manchester United Angel Di Maria shirts proved the most unwanted during Carling's recent shirt amnesty.

The scheme offered fans of players who recently departed the club to trade their outdated shirts for a brand new strip with a current squad player's name printed on the back.

Supporters of Liverpool, Aston Villa, Southampton, Tottenham and West Brom were given the opportunity to take part in the swap and Harry Kane was the most popular selection as Spurs fans ditched their Roberto Soldado and Gareth Bale kits.

Philippe Coutinho Liverpool shirts were also in high demand, while Raheem Sterling strips were keenly offloaded, but the least popular shirt of all was last season's Manchester United kit with Di Maria's name slapped across the back.

It goes hand-in-hand with data released by Sports Direct earlier this year which showed Di Maria United kits were the most popular top flight shirts in their stores.

Of Premier League kits sold by Mike Ashley's Sports Direct empire between last summer and March this year, nearly 10 per cent were Di Maria shirts, while the next most popular Premier League shirt was that of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez at just three per cent.

As such, there were plenty of obsolete Di Maria shirts lining the forgotten depths of United supporters' cupboards when Carling rolled into town as part of their shirt amnesty.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger were the two players most popular among fans grabbing at the chance to claim United's new adidas strip for free.

Below, we've picked out the 10 most ditched shirts during the swap scheme.

1. Angel Di Maria (Manchester United)

2. Christian Benteke (Aston Villa)

3. Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

4. Adam Lallana (Southampton)

5. Nathaniel Clyne (Southampton)

6. Roberto Soldado (Tottenham)

7. Saido Berhaino (West Brom)

8. Fabian Delph (Aston Villa)

9. Gareth Bale (Tottenham)

10. Robin Van Persie (Manchester United)
