Manchester United player ratings vs Arsenal: Elegant Amad Diallo makes instant impact

Man Utd let down by Casemiro error but young winger Amad impresses

Manchester United’s hopes of securing European football next season suffered another blow as they lost 1-0 at home to title-chasing Arsenal.

Leandro Trossard’s first-half tap-in was the difference in a cagey, low-quality affair, which leaves United still three points behind Wednesday’s opponents Newcastle and Chelsea.

Here’s how we rated the Man Utd players…

Andre Onana 7

Denied Gabriel Martinelli a crucial second with a brilliant one-handed save. Not at fault for Trossard’s close-range finish.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 6

Alert defensively, although Martinelli got the best of him for a late chance.

Played Kai Havertz a mile onside for the opening goal and then failed to track the run of Trossard. It was to prove the decisive error of the match.

Jonny Evans 6

Too easily beaten by Havertz for Trossard’s goal but was otherwise played well, particularly with the ball.

Diogo Dalot 7

Helped to keep Bukayo Saka quiet and carried the ball out of defence well at times.

Kobbie Mainoo 6

Tidy and composed in possession in a more advanced midfield role. But rarely looked like hurting Arsenal in the final third.

Sofyan Amrabat 6

Some of his passing was careless but he covered plenty of ground and helped United to hold their own in the middle of the park.

Scott McTominay 6

Got stuck in and drove forward with the ball when possible.

Alejandro Garnacho 6

Stretched Ben White, particularly in the second half, but his end product was missing and he squandered some decent openings.

Comfortable and elegant in possession and worked hard up and down the right flank. Shame he was forced off injured with 20 minutes to go.

Rasmus Hojlund 5

Wasted an early sight of goal when he lost his footing and barely had a sniff afterwards in an anonymous display.

Substitutes:

Antony (Diallo 70’) 7

Made an immediate impression with several driving runs and fired a shot into the side netting.

Willy Kambwala (Evans 75’) 6

Solid at centre-half for the final 15 minutes, with United largely on the attack.

Christian Eriksen (Amrabat 87’) 6

Made an important late intervention in the area to deny Arsenal a second.

Omari Forson (Wan-Bissaka 87’) 5

Limited time to make an impression, even as United pushed forward late on.

Ethan Wheatley (Hojlund 88’) 5

Not enough time to make an impression.

Not used: Bayindir, Collyer, Amass, Ogunneye.
