Man United player ratings vs Brentford: Martinez bullied, De Gea broken and Eriksen embarrassed

Manchester United’s dismal start to the season got an awful lot worse as they were hammered 4-0 by Brentford on Saturday evening.

Here’s how Erik ten Hag’s side rated at the Tech Community Stadium...

David de Gea 2

An absolute grade A clanger for Dasilva’s opener, then put Eriksen in trouble with hospital pass for the second.

Diogo Dalot 4

Probably the best of United’s back four, which says plenty.

Harry Maguire 3

All at sea against the physicality and pace of Toney and Mbuemo. Booked.

Lisandro Martinez 2

Bullied out of it by Ben Mee for third Brentford goal, did nothing to prevent Toney teeing up the fourth. Dragged at half-time.

Luke Shaw 3

Badly outpaced by Bryan Mbuemo for fourth goal and might have seen red for a tug had the Frenchman not scored. Didn’t make it back out for the second half anyway.

Fred 4

Usually one of the scapegoats for this kind of disasterclass but no worse than anyone else. Still, hooked at the break.

Christian Eriksen 3

Every touch booed on his return to his former club and had a first-half nightmare. Pocket picked for Jensen goal. Could not get off fast enough when subbed late on.

Bruno Fernandes 3

Completely nullified by the superb Norgaard.

Jadon Sancho 4

Carried a little more fight than some of those around him but never able to threaten.

Marcus Rashford 3

Anonymous showing. Idea that Ten Hag’s arrival might jump start his career could not be further from the truth so far. Booked.

Cristiano Ronaldo 5

Rolling on the floor asking for a non-existent foul as Brentford opened the scoring. Did go close with a couple of second half headers.

Substitutes

Scott McTominay (Fred 46’) 5

Booked for desperate tackle on Onyeka.

Raphael Varane (Martinez 46’) 6

Made a couple of important interceptions in the box early in the second half. Will surely start against Liverpool.

Tyrell Malacia (Shaw 46’) 6

A few bits of alert defending but not overly tested as Brentford grew more conservative.

Anthony Elanga (Sancho 60’) 5

Donny van de Beek (Eriksen 87’)

Unused: Heaton, Wan-Bissaka, Garner, Van de Beek, Garnacho
