Mason Greenwood is Manchester United's new star? Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says 'the sky's the limit'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given the clearest indication that Mason Greenwood is now part of his strongest attack at Manchester United.

The 18-year-old has established himself on the right of a thrilling front three alongside Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Despite Solskjaer making Jadon Sancho his top target when the transfer window opens, he claims the ‘sky’s the limit’ for Greenwood, who has enjoyed an outstanding breakthrough season, scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

Solskjaer insists he will continue to manage the development of the forward, but the belief at Old Trafford is that they have unearthed a generational talent.

“We have done well over the course of the season giving him more and more exposure, more and more game time,” said the United manager.

“It’s not easy being a young boy. He could still play in the FA Youth Cup team, but he’s performing off the bench or when he starts and he’s developed fantastically this season.

“The sky’s the limit. It’s up to him and he knows what he should do, can do and must do to continue playing - but that’s between us.”

Greenwood scored a stunning goal in Tuesday’s 3-0 win against Brighton.

The decision to extend Odion Ighalo’s loan deal and drop out of the race for Timo Werner was with a view to seeing how he develops further over the next six months.

He is seen as a centre striker in the long-term, but Solskjaer insists he is not yet ready to lead the line.

“He’s a centre forward by, trade but likes to drift wide,” he said. “He likes to face forwards and that’s a different role from the role of through the middle, back to goal, link it, which Mason is improving on.

“His body is filling out and he can play that position, like we’ve seen with Marcus and Anthony - good footballers, good goal-scorers and good movement. Not just stuck between the posts.

“Mason’s way ahead of what I was at 18, 19 that’s for sure. He’s got a knack of scoring goals. I don’t want to say anything different.

“It’s natural for him and it’s what I could do as well. He’s a brilliant boy to learn with and keeps making better decisions.”
