Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann has admitted talks over a move to Manchester United earlier this summer were “serious”.

The Austrian international was of interest to the Old Trafford giants as Erik ten Hag chased an alternative to David de Gea, a back-up option who could cover and compete with the Spanish international in equal measure.

Eventually, United brought in Newcastle stopper Martin Dubravka on a season-long loan deal amid doubts surrounding de Gea’s suitability to play in ten Hag’s ideally more progressive system, while Bachmann remained at Vicarage Road.

Hornets boss Rob Edwards has selected the 28-year-old for all eight of Watford’s Championship outings this season as the club look for a quick-fire return to the Premier League and Bachmann himself insists he is happy to stay despite negotiations between the clubs.

Speaking to LAOLA1, Bachmann said: “There have been talks with Manchester United. That’s no secret.

“Of course, it’s great to be associated with such a club. It was also serious. There were negotiations between the clubs and of course between me and the clubs.

“In the end, however, I’m still a Watford player and I’m very happy about it. Because I play here regularly, bring in my performances and hopefully can play a role in the national team again.”
