Megan Rapinoe was named the Best Women's Player at the Best Fifa Football Awards on Monday.

USA international Rapinoe took the award ahead of international team-mate Alex Morgan, who matched her in scoring six times during the summer's tournament in France, and England's Lucy Bronze, who was the Silver Ball winner at the World Cup.

Rapinoe announced herself on the world stage during the World Cup, picking up the Golden Ball for the tournament's best player, the Golden Boot for tournament top scorer and made sure USA retained the trophy won four years prior.

The 34-year-old scored her sixth goal of the tournament in the final having days earlier accused Fifa of showing a "lack of respect" to the women's game with the showpiece scheduled on the same day as the Copa America and Gold Cup finals.

Rapinoe also angered Donald Trump for refusing to visit the White House, one of many of the winners to do so, with the US President accusing her of "disrespecting our country [and] our flag."

She used her platform on Monday to call for further change in the game, name-checking the likes of Raheem Sterling for his action against racism in the sport.

"Some of the stories that inspired me this year, Raheem Sterling and Koulibaly their incredible performance on the field and their reaction to the disgusting racism they have to take," she said.

"If we really want to have meaningful change, if everyone other than Sterling or Koulibaly was outraged, if everyone was outraged by the homophobia. We have such an incredible opportunity being professional footballers, so much success, an incredible platform.

"I ask everyone here, lend your platform to other people, share your success. We have a unique opportunity to use this game to actually change the world for better. I hope you take that to heart, do something, we have incredible power in this room."

Lionel Messi picked up the men's prize.
