Liverpool will consider whether to bolster their goalkeeping options by offering a short-term deal to free agent Andy Lonergan this week.

The Reds were hit with an injury blow between the sticks in their Premier League opener against Norwich on Friday, with Alisson Becker picking up a calf injury while taking a goal kick.

Summer signing Adrian subsequently took the Brazilian’s place and is likely set for a sustained run in the first team, but Jurgen Klopp’s options are thin beyond that.

Irish youngster Caoimhin Kelleher is currently recovering from surgery on a wrist injury and may not be ready to feature on the bench.

Fellow academy prospect Viteslev Jaros is also sidelined by an elbow problem, while Kamil Grabara recently joined Huddersfield on loan.

As such, Klopp may look to offer Lonergan, who helped alleviate Liverpool’s goalkeeping problem during their recent pre-season tour of the United States, a contract covering the early stages of the season.

And he will hope for good news from further tests on Alisson, the results of which are expected over the weekend.
