Liverpool have confirmed that club cardiologist Professor John Deelun Somauroo has passed away following a battle with cancer.

A specialist at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, Professor Somauroo also worked with the FA and British Cycling during a distinguished career.

He was known to Reds fans through his regular appearances on behind-the-scenes videos chronicling the first day at Melwood for new signings, his role requiring involvement in each player's medical.

A lifelong supporter of the club, Prof Somauroo was also a regular at Anfield on matchdays, assisting Jurgen Klopp's medical team in their duties.

Former club doctor Andy Massey, now head of medical services at Fifa, paid tribute to a 'trusted friend' following confirmation of the news.

He wrote: The world would be a better place if there were a few more John Somauroos.

"Look after him up above, a true gentleman, a fantastic colleague and a trusted friend, with a beautiful family."
