Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has told Raheem Sterling to 'be a man' after the wantaway winger informed the club earlier this week of his desire to leave Anfield.

Sterling, who is wanted by Manchester City, is understood to have reported in sick twice this week, missing consecutive training sessions on Tuesday and Wednesday, having told Liverpool of his desire not to attend their pre-season tour which will see them face a Thai All Stars side in Bangkok next week.

Tensions have seemingly ran high between both parties since his Sterling’s agent, Aidy Ward, told the Evening Standard that '£900k-a-week would not keep’ his client at Anfield, and with the club holding out for an offer in the region of £50 million, his former captain has spoken out against the 20-year-old.

"I'm not happy with all that carry-on and I don't think there's any need for it,” Gerrard told Sky Sports. “They all need to be men about the situation."

"Raheem needs to go in and speak to the owners and to Brendan [Rodgers] himself, tell them what he wants and go about it that way. You don't have to throw illnesses in and refuse to go on tour.

"There are millions and millions of Liverpool fans around the world who are itching to see Raheem Sterling in a Liverpool kit. So I don't think it's fair on them if he is behaving like that."
