Liverpool: Andy Robertson fit for Carabao Cup clash vs Fulham in injury boost

The left-back has been sidelined since October, and will be joined by the fit-again Curtis Jones

Liverpool have been handed a huge boost as defender Andy Robertson will be in the squad for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Fulham.

Robertson has not featured since October after injuring his shoulder playing for Scotland against Spain.

The left-back, who had to undergo surgery, took part in training on Monday and will be in the Liverpool squad at Craven Cottage.

Midfielder Curtis Jones is also fit after coming off early in the 4-0 win at Bournemouth on Sunday, but Dominik Szoboszlai, Konstantinos Tsimikas and Trent Alexander-Arnold are still out.

Speaking about Robertson’s return, Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders said: “It’s now 13 weeks, he had his meeting with the surgeon to make sure that everything is right to go into full contact – it’s clear.

“So he did a lot of work and really good rehab throughout the last period, so he’s fit in terms of sports science. Now he has to get fit with proper team training.

“So that’s a big, big advantage to have him back. We were waiting for a long time – he’s one of our captains. I just met him in the canteen and he said, “Pep, I have my tracksuit with me!’ So he's pushing himself into the squad, so that’s good. He will travel [to Fulham].”

Midfielder Jones gave Liverpool an injury scare when he came off early against Bournemouth on Sunday, but Lijnders has confirmed he is fine.

“When you play more games and when you are constantly in the team since a long, long time, you get also some small niggles,” he said. “He already reported during the week some tension in his hamstring tendon. But yesterday [there were] no issues, so he was clear.”

Alexander-Arnold has been out since earlier this month with a knee injury, but could return this weekend when Liverpool host Norwich in the FA Cup. The same goes for Szoboszlai, who has struggled with a hamstring issue.

Even if they do not make Sunday’s game at home to Norwich, both should be back for next week’s Premier League games with Chelsea and Arsenal.

“Trent is progressing well through his rehab, working hard – how he is as a guy, knowing how important the next weeks are,” said Lijnders. "But he will back in the end of the week for team training, so hopefully he will be available for the FA Cup.

“Dom trained [on Monday] with us, just one small-sided game, one-touch game, but played good, felt good, did some extra work with the sports science team. He is ready but tomorrow comes too early for him, so he will be ready for the weekend if nothing goes wrong.”

Left-back Tsimikas has been out since just before Christmas after breaking his collarbone in the draw with Arsenal and is still out.

“Kostas is now four weeks after surgery, so he needs probably two more weeks because we need to make sure that the bone is strong and the bone is healed before he goes into first-team training,” said Lijnders.
