Arsenal Ladies captain Alex Scott believes Arsene Wenger should determine the manner of his departure from the club as the Frenchman prevaricates over a new contract.

Heading into Arsenal’s final Premier League game of the season Wenger has yet to announce whether he will extend his two decade stay at the club.

Though he has consistently hinted that his first preference is to remain at Arsenal Wenger has faced a string of protests from fans, most recently with thousands staying away from Tuesday’s win over Sunderland.

In a statement in March Arsenal chairman Sir Chips Keswick insisted a decision over Wenger’s future would be “mutual”. Scott, whose association with Arsenal dates back to 1992, believes it should be up to the manager to decide his future.

“I’ve grown up at the club and I absolutely love what Arsene Wenger has done for the club, the amount of success that he’s brought,” Scott said after Arsenal Ladies’ 2-2 draw with Chelsea on Wednesday.

“And I think it should be his decision, when he goes and when he steps down.

“I just appreciate everything, where’s he’s taken the club and it’s his decision.”

Wenger has long been an advocate of the Arsenal Ladies side and in an exclusive interview last year their manager Pedro Martinez Losa labelled the Frenchman “a role model for Arsenal”.

Scott added: “I’ve had conversations with him and sat down, and he’s such an intelligent guy and interesting, so many stories, and he’s always been behind the Arsenal Ladies, and that will continue I’m sure.”
