League Two clubs have "unanimously indicated a preferred direction of travel" to end the 2019-20 season, the English Football League (EFL) confirmed on Friday.

With all professional football in England suspended since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic, clubs from the third and fourth tiers held further talks via video link over the fate of their respective campaigns with the EFL on Friday.

In an official statement released after those discussions, the EFL said the organisation's board had outlined how the curtailing of seasons could be addressed through a "framework" including maintaining promotion and relegation, deciding final league positions via an unweighted points per game (PPG) system and keeping the play-offs intact.

They added that League Two clubs had now relayed a preference to curtail the current campaign in line with that framework and had additionally asked for "consideration to be given" to suspending relegation to the National League.

"No commitments were made in this respect and the Board will now consider the implications of the division’s preferred approach at their next meeting," the EFL said.

Crewe Alexandra currently sit top of League Two after 37 games, ahead of second-placed Swindon Town - who have played one fixture less - on goal difference.

The final automatic promotion slot is occupied by Plymouth Argyle, with Exeter City, Cheltenham Town, Colchester United and Northampton Town all sat in play-off positions when the campaign was halted.

Port Vale are just a point behind the play-off pack in seventh.

Following Bury's removal from the EFL in August 2019, only one team - rather than the usual two - was due to be relegated from League Two this season.

Stevenage sit bottom of the table, three points adrift of Macclesfield Town having played one fewer match.

Meanwhile, discussions between League One clubs and the EFL are set to continue early next week, with no agreement reached on the fate of the season in the third tier as the league stressed the need to find "innovative and creative" solutions.

Standard Sport understands that talks with League One clubs were mostly dominated by play-off contenders who want to continue the season, with a number of passionate speeches made including by Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony.

On Thursday, MacAnthony communicated a message on behalf of Peterborough, Oxford United, Fleetwood Town, Ipswich Town, Sunderland and Portsmouth, outlining those clubs' collective goal to play out the season.

The EFL said: "There were varied views shared in League One and it was determined that there would be a further period of reflection and consultation to understand what creative solutions could be implemented.

"It was acknowledged that the need to find innovative and creative solutions was of paramount importance as was the need for decisions to be taken quickly."

The EFL further confirmed that Championship clubs remain eager to fulfil their 2019-20 fixtures after a meeting earlier this week.

"In addition, Championship Clubs met earlier this week and have indicated that it is their wish to play on and conclude the season," the statement concluded.

"The EFL will continue to work with all its members to progress the discussions and arrive at the necessary decisions as appropriate in what remain challenging and complex circumstances."
