Kevin Friend was right to send off John Terry in Chelsea's FA Cup victory over Peterborough, according to former Premier League referee Graham Poll.

Terry was shown a red card by official Friend after fouling Lee Angol as the Posh forward charged down on goal with just over 20 minutes remaing at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues were already 3-0 up when Terry brought down Angol and Pedro later added a fourth after Tom Nichols had reduced the deficit minutes after the controversial sending off.

Friend decided Terry was the last man, but the Chelsea captain maintained his innocence after the final whistle.

The former England captain took to Instagram and claimed he hadn't touched Angol, adding that he would appeal the dismissal.

But Poll has since backed the official's view of the incident.

"Kevin Friend was correct to dismiss John Terry despite the former England captain's protest of innocence," wrote Poll in the Daily Mail.

"Peterborough's Lee Angol was clean through with a clear and obvious goal scoring opportunity with just Terry to get past.

"The Blues captain went to ground which resulted in Angol tripping over him.

"Terry claimed he had slipped but intent wasn't relevant.

"The fact that his prone body stopped his opponents progress meant Friend had no option but to get his red card out."
