Jose Mourinho's public criticism of his Chelsea players could be damaging their confidence, according to former Blues defender Filipe Luis.

Mourinho has openly questioned some of his under-performing stars this season following Chelsea's worst start to a Premier League campaign in more than a decade, with last season's PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard having come in for particular criticism from the Portuguese tactician.

Mourinho admitted after Chelsea's 2-0 league win over Aston Villa in October that he had dropped Hazard for the game because of concerns over his defensive work, with the Belgian having subsequently seen himself go in and out of the team.

And Luis, who re-joined Atletico Madrid this summer after just one season at Stamford Bridge, believes Mourinho's methods of publicly calling out some of his players may be having a detrimental effect on some of his Chelsea stars.

“Sometimes he’s right and sometimes he’s not. Sometimes people think what he says is absurd and sometimes they agree with him. It’s the way he is and the way he works – I see it as normal," the full-back told Yahoo Sports.

"Obviously when you don't get the results you want, you look for reasons and solutions and people try to work out why it's happened, but he's still the same person.

"The whole world knows him already. He's difficult to describe. It's better for him to describe himself.

"He has his way of talking to the press, especially when the team loses, which can sometimes be damaging to certain players. Some players benefit from criticism but for others they don’t."
