Jose Mourinho came out fighting in reaction to the most turbulent week of his Manchester United career.

Mourinho responded to back-to-back defeats by describing himself as “one of the greatest managers in the world.”

The United manager’s position is under intense scrutiny following defeats to Brighton and Tottenham that have left six points off the pace at the top of the Premier League.

But he is adamant his standing in the game will not be diminished even if his Old Trafford tenure unravels.

“I have won eight titles, I am the only manager in the world that won in Italy, Spain and England,” he said.

“And after winning eight titles, not small titles, my second position last season is still one of my greatest achievements in football.”

United’s hierarchy remain fully in support of Mourinho, but Sunday’s game against Burnley is already a must-win after picking up just three points from their first three games of the season.

Mourinho added: "I had great success last season and that's probably what you don't want to admit.

"Two seasons ago we had a fantastic season because we won the Europa League. We won it because it was our level. We are the last team in England to win a European competition.”

Mourinho confirmed Phil Jones is out of contention for Burnley with a hamstring injury - but Diogo Dalot, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo are all nearing returns.

"Jones is injured, as you can imagine,” he told MUTV. "Dalot and Romero will play [Friday evening] at Old Trafford in an Under-23s match, which is the first match for them after knee surgeries. They need that a little bit but it's good news for them because after that it's the international break, and after that they'll be in a real condition to play.

"Marcos Rojo started training with the team a couple of days ago. He's not ready for this [Under-23s] match but he is training with the team."
