John Terry promised West Ham pair James Collins and Mark Noble a "night out on the Chelsea boys" if the Hammers could beat Premier League rivals Tottenham.

Spurs went into their derby match against West Ham at the London Stadium on 5 May knowing a win over their city rivals would see them move to within a point of league leaders Chelsea.

But Manuel Lanzini's 65th-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory for Slaven Bilic's side, which meant Chelsea could wrap up the title if they beat Middlesbrough at home and then West Brom away the following week - which they did.

And Collins has now revealed a similar story, admitting Chelsea captain Terry text him and West Ham skipper Noble to urge the east Londoners to put an end to Tottenham's title run.

He told Betway Insider: "John Terry text me and Mark Noble saying, 'If you boys beat Tottenham there’s a dinner or a night out on the Chelsea boys,' so that was nice.

"But we wanted to beat Tottenham anyway. We’re lucky we did in the end looking at the result we got after that [a 4-0 loss against Liverpool].

"It was a massive result, it put us safe and obviously to beat our closest rivals at home was massive."

The victory was important for West Ham not just for the derby bragging rights but also because it assured the Hammers of their place in the Premier League for next season.

Collins praised the way under-fire manager Bilic prepared the team for the clash, and revealed the West Ham team watched plenty of videos to come up with a gameplan that would see off Spurs.

"You’ve got to give credit to the gaffer. They only went long ball because we stopped them playing threaded balls into the holes, into Harry Kane’s feet, into Dele Alli letting him get there and turn," Collins added.

"So we stopped that and forced them into playing the long balls where we’re strong all the way along the back. Me, Winston [Reid] and [Jose] Fonte are all very capable at the back and that sort of played into our hands.

"Harry Kane had a chance early on but after that we were very comfortable, so we were happy with how it went. It’s all about the tactics on the night, you change formations, change tactics for each team you play.

"Credit to the gaffer he got it spot on and we stopped them. Obviously we watched a lot of videos on how they play and obviously the gaffer and his staff have looked into how they play and set up the team to stop them scoring and hopefully we could get one, which we did."
