Jan Vertonghen happy with full-back role at Tottenham

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has dismissed suggestions that he is unhappy at having to play out of position.

The Belgium international has been a regular fixture in the side since his £8m arrival from Ajax in 2012, starring at centre-half alongside captain Michael Dawson.

However, the 25-year-old has been forced to play in an unfamiliar role of late, deputising for the injured Danny Rose at left-back.

Vertonghen conceded that talks had taken place with coach Andre Villas-Boas regarding his positional change, although he insisted that the matter is now resolved and claims he is happy to play in his new role.

"There are always words taken out of context and interpreted differently in the press. I am happy with my role at left-back,” Vertonghen said.

“I’m very happy, everything is solved. I had a good talk with the coach and everything is fine now.”

Villas-Boas is hoping to have Rose available for selection again after the international break, with the 23-year-old expected to return after missing the last 10 matches with a toe injury.

And his return means that Vertonghen, currently on international duty with the Belgium national team, should be able to revert back to his favoured position in the side after Vlad Chiriches picked up an injury in the 1-0 defeat to Newcastle.
