Striking miss: Jackson Martinez spurns glorious chance

Last week Jackson Martinez was celebrating a winning goal against Bayern Munich, this week he’ll be kicking himself as to how he missed the target against Academica de Coimbra.

Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the Bundesliga giants put FC Porto on verge of the Champions League semi-finals, as they bid to reach their first European Cup final since tasting victory under Jose Mourinho back in 2004.

Porto currently find themselves second in the Primeira Liga, trailing rivals Benfica by three points.

In truth, Julen Lopetegui’s side could have found themselves further adrift had 23-year-old forward Hernani not found the net against the Portuguese league strugglers.

Jackson Martinez certainly didn’t help, after his late introduction.

Having seen Alex Sandro’s cross evade goalkeeper Cristiano, the Colombia international was left with the goal gaping …but he missed what would have been his 24th goal of the season.

Martinez came on as an 83rd minute substitute with Porto looking to rest their star striker ahead of the second leg against Bayern. But, on Saturday’s evidence, the 28-year-old could do with some more shuteye.
