Harry Kane spared England's blushes after his late goal rescued a point against Scotland as the Three Lions drew 2-2 at Hampden Park on Saturday.

England looked to be heading to their first defeat of their World Cup qualifying campaign after Leigh Griffiths scored two superb free kicks in the 87th and 90th minute to help the hosts come from behind following substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's opener in the 70th minute.

But Tottenham star Kane - captaining England for the first time in the absence of Wayne Rooney - had the last say after firing in from close range in the 93rd minute to secure a point for England and ensure the team remain unbeaten in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

The 2-2 draw means Southgate's side remain top of the standings with 14 points while Scotland sit in fourth place with eight points.

Speaking after match, England captain Kane told ITV Sport: "It is a special day. To be 2-1 down in stoppage time, to get that goal is special.

"I was trying to get a good contact on it and side-footed into the net. You have to expect the unexpected and we were 2-1 down from nowhere but we found another gear.

"It is a good point away from home. Scotland is no easy place to come."
