Guernsey minister open to completing Premier League season on Channel Island

Guernsey's Chief Minister is open to "sensible dialogue" about completing the Premier League season on the Channel Island.

Deputy Gavin St Pier has raised the possibility of top flight clubs hopping over to the Guernsey to fulfil the outstanding 92 fixtures.

Lockdown restrictions were eased in Guernsey on Saturday and the island has now reported no new coronavirus cases for 18 days.

Monday's update confirmed just four active cases in Guernsey.

Their success in fighting the virus prompted one islander to suggest: "Here’s a thought. Guernsey eradicates Corona Virus. All premiership footballers come to Guernsey, self isolate for 14 days & then finish the premiership in Guernsey, with locals as their spectators."

Responding to the tweet, St Pier said: "If anyone is seriously interested, I am sure we could have sensible dialogue about how to plan and execute safely - so off the wall and a bit crazy but would not dismiss out of hand..."

The Premier League season is on course to resume in June after clubs gave the green light to group training at a meeting on Monday.

June 12 has been earmarked as a "staging post" for the League's resumption, though it now looks likely the top flight will return later in June with players and club staff keen to partake in a 'mini pre-season' before returning to match action.
