Emmanuel Adebayor is set to return to the Tottenham starting XI for tonight’s Capital One Cup quarter-final against West Ham.

The Togo striker has made just one substitute appearance this season after being frozen out by Andre Villas-Boas but has been handed a chance to revive his Spurs career by temporary boss Tim Sherwood.

Villas-Boas was axed on Monday following a poor run of form that culminated in Sunday’s 5-0 thrashing against Liverpool — the club’s heaviest home defeat for 16 years.

Adebayor scored 17 goals in 33 Premier League games while on loan at White Hart Lane in 2011-12 but failed to replicate that form the following season after completing a £5million transfer from Manchester City, scoring just nine goals in all competitions.

The 29-year-old was given compassionate leave following his brother’s death over the summer but was forced to train with the reserves on his return by Villas-Boas — and their relationship never recovered.

It is believed chairman Daniel Levy and senior Spurs players urged Villas-Boas to reintegrate Adebayor and play with two strikers as the team struggled for goals but the Portuguese was unwilling to alter his tactics.
