Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny has suffered a calf strain on international duty with Egypt.

However his manager Hector Cuper hopes that Elneny will be available for the final round of Africa Cup of Nations games after Egypt secured a semi-final berth with an 87th minute strike against Morocco.

Arsenal medical staff will receive an assessment of the injury from their Egyptian counterparts but initial evaluations from Cuper suggest that Elneny may yet play a further part in Afcon, though the semi-final with Burkina Faso will be beyond him.

“Elneny will not be available against Burkina Faso, he has a calf strain. We will send a medical report to his club,” Cuper said after his side’s 1-0 win over Morocco.

“He will have tests and we hope if we manage to reach the final that he can return.”

In the likely scenario that Elneny remains with the Egypt squad he will now not be available for Arsene Wenger’s threadbare midfield, which is also without the injured Santi Cazorla and the suspended Granit Xhaka, until the visit of Hull on February 11.
