Dimitri Payet has admitted he was "touched" after hearing a chant West Ham fans sang following the club's win over Crystal Palace that compared him to France legend Zinedine Zidane.

Payet has become a fans' favourite since arriving at Upton Park in a £10million deal from French giants Marseille in June after scoring five goals and creating 35 key passes for the Hammers - which has made him the most creative player in Europe this term.

His contributions to West Ham's rise to fourth place in the Premier League table has been such that the club's supporters were filmed singing Payet is "better than Zidane" following the 3-1 derby victory at Selhurst Park last weekend.

And the 28-year-old has revealed just how special he felt after hearing the chant, admitting he was "touched" to have been compared to French great Zidane by the West Ham fans.

"I heard it after the Crystal Palace match – it was posted a lot on my Twitter feed," Payet told the Daily Mirror.

"It is the first time I have a song with my name – it never happens in France. It really touched me. I would like to thank the fans.

"Even to be compared with him [Zidane] is a really good thing for me."
