Diego Costa has said "it's very important" that Chelsea continues to target discriminatory behaviour because of the "magnitude of the club".

The striker was speaking after a group of Chelsea fans were filmed in Paris on Tuesday night racially abusing a black man who they stopped from boarding a Paris Metro train.

Chelsea have strongly condemned the supporters captured on video and have stated that anyone found to be involved in the incident will be banned.

Video footage posted online shows the man trying to board a train at Richelieu-Drouot station in the French capital but is stopped by a group of Chelsea fans, who are filmed shouting and singing at him before last night’s Champions League tie between Paris Saint-Germain and the Blues. They also chanted: "We're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it."

Costa, who joined the west London club last summer, said he has been impressed with what Chelsea has done to tackle issues of equality.

Speaking to Chelsea's official website ahead of Saturday's Game for Equality against Burnley, the striker praised the work of the club.

"It's very important, especially because of the magnitude of the club," Costa said.

"Chelsea can set an example with regards to equality within the game. I know the club has been doing a lot of work in order to promote equality and take away discrimination. A lot of hard work has been done and it's hugely important."

He added: "We work every day and we know we are a big example to children around the world. It’s important to remember that we are all learning ourselves because we are not born with lots of knowledge. Children look up to us and that’s where they learn their traits from, so we are very important in the process."
