Uefa are unlikely to punish Denmark for fielding a weakened team in Wednesday night’s 3-0 defeat against Slovakia but are still weighing up whether to intervene ahead of their Uefa Nations League opener against Wales.

The Danish Football Association are embroiled in a row with a host of senior players over a commercial rights agreement which prompted the omission of several leading stars, in addition to the country’s manager and assistant, in Trnava.

With Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen and Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel among those absent, a team under the temporary charge of former Arsenal midfielder John Jensen and containing futsal and part-time players, one of which is a salesman, another a student, were well beaten.

Standard Sport understands Uefa will not seek to impose any sanctions as the match was merely a friendly but Republic of Ireland boss Martin O’Neill has called upon Uefa to act given his team are in a group containing Denmark and Wales, who are due to meet on Sunday.

If the situation is not resolved, O’Neill believes they could be at a disadvantage in the three-team group.

“Uefa probably should [act] and will as well, if it develops in the direction it looks to be going,” he said. “If it does develop this way, there would certainly be a degree of unfairness about it.”

A Uefa spokesman said: “Uefa is monitoring the situation.”
